چکیده
Abstract— The ability of red blood cells (RBC) to deform under vascular conditions is essential for circulation. RBC deformability, measured at different shear rates and osmolalities, provides a useful way to evaluate RBC function and is used to diagnose several hereditary blood disorders. In clinical practice, ektacytometry has been used as a routine automated technique for measuring RBC deformability under shear stress at known osmolalities. RBC suspension is exposed to laser light and the resulting diffraction pattern is recorded. The mean deformability of the cells is characterized by the diffraction pattern. Our study is the first to compare the correspondence between two methods that measure diffraction simultaneously, on the same apparatus. Additionally, while others conducted studies under varying shear we used varying osmolalities. A laser beam splitter produced two identical diffraction patterns, evaluated by synchronous data acquisition and analysis: One pattern was acquired by a digital camera and analyzed by image processing software. The other was analyzed using photodiode measurement at four fixed points and a microcontroller interface. Data analysis resulted in two deformability vs. osmolality curves. Comparing these curves shows excellent overlap in shape with a clear difference in amplitude. Since routine

Whole cell deformability of red cells was measured as a continuous function of suspending medium osmolality using the ektacytometer, a laser-diffraction viscometer. Study of normal cells in which water content and membrane surface area had been selectively modified showed that this technique can detect changes in these properties with high sensitivity. The osmotic deformability profiles obtaine...

Osmotic gradient ektacytometry (measuring elongation index in the function of osmolality at a constant shear stress) is a sensitive method to analyze red blood cell (RBC) deformability and investigating the optimal osmolality range for the cells in normal or pathophysiological cellular and micro-environmental conditions. However, the methodological conditions are different, since the results ar...

Blood of Pacific salmon was studied with particular interest in red blood cell (RBC) deformability in relation to migration. Blood samples were taken via cardiac puncture or chronic cannula placed in the dorsal aorta and heparinized. As an index of RBC deformability the mean passage time of single RBCs through micropores of 8 micron in diameter and 10 micron in length was determined under a pre...

Using Gate’s technique for GFR measurement with Gamma camera, the patient is received 5mCi of Tc-99m-DTPA. By this amount of radioactivity, good quality renal scan is not possible. This study tries to optimize Gate’s technique for GFR measurement during routine renal scan (with 10-15 mCi). Methods and materials: Scanning was performed for 60 seconds from samples of Tc-99m with activities ...
